When the young and bashful Mildred Johnson is forced to join a political campaign to elect Chicago 's first Black mayor, she is faced with a life-altering dilemma: either continue to bury her emotions in a private journal or become a woman! Empowered by her elderly aunt's passion and the love of a sexy, dashiki wearing political activist, Mildred embarks on an emotional journey that not only teaches her to embrace the bitter realities of her past but to also acknowledge and accept her own self-worth.
In Some Glad Morning , I was taken back to a time when men respectfully pursued a woman for the fruit of her mind, not just the lushness of her body; young people acknowledged the past struggles of their ancestors and fought endlessly for the continued advancement of their community; and, the community was the family, united in one cause. Steele enables readers to taste the exhilaration of change as well as the pain in the struggle for justice. Though in the beginning the storyline's movement was slow and there was some plot confusion, I was able to experience the characters' growth throughout the novel. All in all, Steele has crafted an inspirational message that will empower all, regardless of race, to embrace change.
