Not His Type by Charmein Canton accomplished its goal of conveying that readers should not be afraid of rejection and should be confident in their skin. It also encouraged its audience to take a chance on love no matter the shape or size of an individual, because you could easily be missing out on what’s best for you. However, due to message being revealed within the first few pages, to me, the remainder of the book was redundant and unentertaining. Considering the message was already implied prematurely, I felt the 450+ pages of the book were predictable. Although the author’s writing style was intelligent and well-developed, as a seasoned reader, this one would not be in my top recommended books. - Sistah Shauna

When I picked up the book, I was excited about reading it, and I thought it had a lot of potential until I could not get past the second chapter. I desperately tried to hold on during three separate occasions, and I just could not do it. First of all, the movie Something New kept popping up in my head. The image was just stuck. Secondly, the adjectives describing everything except the characters were overwhelming. I picked up the book with such high expectations only to be disappointed. - Sistah Sheila

It took me a long time to get into this book. In my opinion, there was a lot of time spent on descriptions that really could have been left out. For example, very early in the novel, it was known that Chalayne loved basketball and basketball clothing, so I felt that it wasn’t necessary to mention and describe in detail the “b-ball” gear. The main plot was buried deeply into the descriptions of the clothing, jewerly, etc.

Additionally, the main storyline never really came together for me. I felt there were things I needed to know that I wasn’t told, plus there were many things in the book that could have been omitted that took away from the storyline.

This was my first time reading anything by Ms. Mathis, so I don’t have a basis for comparision, but I did not enjoy the book as well as I have enjoyed some of the other Urban Fiction that I have read. - Sistah Deniece
