I’m a sucker for romance; I search for those sensual scenes that make me fall in love all over again. In If You Were Mine by J.S. Hawley, I didn’t get that feeling—the IT I search for when reading a good romance.

A slow read from the beginning, I was confused by the breaks in the plot that simply clouded the storyline. Characters seemed to come out of nowhere and the timeline baffled me. I found myself having to flip back through the book to wonder if I’d missed something.

On the positive side, there were some steamy love scenes between Jai and Caleb that spiked my “hot” meter, but they were overshadowed by the climax that chugged like the Little Engine That Could but never really made it over the hill . . . Then it was happily every after—however many years later. At the very end, I just felt lost. I’m convinced this was an editing issue, and in the future, I’m willing to give it a try again . . . I did enjoy some of the sex scenes. -  Sistah Tasha

Unlike Skettett’s other books, which are written in third person, Letting Loose is written in first person. This is the story of Amelia Wilson, a Boston schoolteacher, who allows her roommates to introduce her to Drew. Via the internet, Amelia and Drew get to know each other. At Drew’s urgings, Amelia finally takes the next step and travel to the island of Dominica to meet Drew face to face. Their relationship quickly blossoms, but now without some drama. There were some parts of the book that I felt needed more definition. The book was a slow read, and it took me several chapters to really get into the book. It seemed to have taken too long to develop the plot/characters. Actually, some of the secondary plots were more interesting to me than the main storyline. I give the book 2.5 pink diamonds. - Sistah Deniece

When I first received this book, I thought that the title was such a strong statement. I just knew that I would be inspired, enlightened, and encouraged. After reading this book, I’m a bit confused. The poetry is nice, but I was left wondering exactly what the author was chosen to do by God. Biblical references and her poetry related to her specific spiritual journey and this made it hard for “her message” to relate to my own experiences. - Sistah Shawn
