Deadbeat by Brian W. Smith is a must read!! True to his style, Brian has once again created a work of art that is sure to be a debate starter. Can a deadbeat father reenter his child’s life after 10 years of being absent, and does a mother have the right to tell a child his father is dead when he is very much alive? If your girlfriend tells you something about your mate, do you believe your friend or the mate? And, what do our young black men need, and how do we give it to them? These are just some of the issues Brian addresses in this novel. But hold on to your seats, because there is a twist in this one that you’ll never see coming! Deadbeat is a page turner that you will NOT want to put down. - Sistah Tashmir

Beater by Brian W. Smith took me for a very turbulent, but enjoyable ride. I thought the book was going to go one way, but it was nowhere near what I thought it would be!

Beater is a story about a brother and sister (Todd and Kim) who are orphans as a result of domestic violence. Their lives take on more turmoil all the way up to their early adult years. Kim, is angry with the world and detaches herself from everyone and Todd, because of a promise he made to his mother, finds himself caught in a relationship with a “beater.”

Being from New Orleans as is Brian, there were some cultural sayings in the book that made me laugh out loud, although the general tone of the book is serious. The cultural sayings coupled with the suspenseful ending made Beater a very good read. I will be reading some of Brian’s other works in the near future. - Sistah Connie

Bended Knees is a touching collection of stories about the happenings of everyday life. With titles like “Forgiveness”,” Against the Grain”, “A House Divided”, “Soldier Surrendered”, “Joy’s Gift”, “Baby Boy” and “Mister are you My Daddy?”, there is something in one or more of these stories that everyone can relate to. Issues like wayward children, paternity deception, non-believers, and mentally ill family members are addressed throughout the pages of Bended Knees but each story reminds of God’s love and the power of forgiveness. My favorite stories were “A House Divided” and “Joy’s Gift”; however, all of the stories were well-written. Bended Knees is a good read especially for someone going through or who has been through one of life’s many tests. You will find yourself rejoicing at the testimonies that arise out of the many tests in this novel. - Sistah Connie

Smith never fails to present a controversial novel! Save your child or another? For a parent, the answer is obvious. However, for Nina, a struggling single parent, the decision is apparent, but the courage to back it is non-existent. Nina’s Got a Secret was fast-pasted with characters so full of ignorant bliss that you can’t help but wonder . . . do people like this really exist? Smith touched gritty topics such as the right to marry for companionship or money instead of love and the obligation to care for someone else’s child with severe special needs. The tinge of mystery made the urban affair unforgettable. And, as always, Smith’s writing is animated and entertaining. Nina’s Got a Secret comes highly recommended for a juicy book club discussion or simply a good night’s read. - Sistah Tasha

From backstabbing friends to scandalous love affairs, Smith’s clear and witty writing style takes you on a wild ride with vivacious characters so true-to-life you can’t help but think, “Don’t I know him?” Hilarious, suspenseful, and downright sexy, Donna’s Dilemma is a quick-paced, thought provoking novel that’ll leave you speechless at the end. -  Sistah Tasha

Mama’s Lies – Daddy’s Pain, Brian W. Smith entertains us with a witty, quick-paced, and emotionally-charged page-turner. He highlights a growing problem that is too often swept under the rug: misuse of the child support system. At times I found myself laughing hysterically and even on the brink of tears, wanting so much to reach through the book and comfort Jamal in my own special way . . . Smith even offers a smart balance; on one hand, he exposes the conniving ex-lover, and on the brighter side, he shows that behind every good man, is a supportive woman! Well-written and delightfully controversial, this book is definitely one you don’t put down until the end. -  Sistah Tasha

In The S.W.A.P. Game, Brian W. Smith delivers a clear message of individual responsibility and accountability in making decisions that can ultimately affect our morality. He openly explores the depth of sexual gratification in a couple’s relationship and the moral obligation of both parties to do all they can to satisfy each others needs. I was both intrigued and appalled by the idea of “swinging” in a relationship. On one hand, it is taboo and a sexual fantasy that can leave one sexually liberated, but on the other hand, why would you openly want to share your partner with someone else and open up the door for jealousy to creep in and destroy something you worked so hard to create? Could you handle playing the game? The author did a great job setting up the story and getting me hooked from the beginning. I thought this was an excellent read, and I definitely give it 5 pink diamonds. - Sistah Shawn
